  • Identify different approaches to advocacy and the values and strategies that underlie them
  • Understand the stages of the advocacy planning cycle and how to build an advocacy strategy
  • Analyse the external environment and policy processes in order to identify appropriate 'levers of influence'
  • Examine what makes lobbying successful
  • Explore best practice in campaigning; how to reach a wider audience; and, how to relate to the media with more confidence
  • Review methods for monitoring and evaluating advocacy initiatives

Meet the trainer  
Tess Kingham


Tess Kingham has experience of working both within the UK Parliament and the international NGO sector. As a Member of the UK Parliament Tess sat on several parliamentary committees, including the Select Committee on International Development and the Committee on Strategic Arms Exports and was a founding member of the global Parliamentary Network on the World Bank. This has given her a personal insight into the political dynamics of the UK, the European Parliament and Commission and the international policy-making arena.

Prior to her political employment Tess worked for NGOs such as War on Want, Oxfam GB, the Blue Cross and Crime Concern. Tess is now a part-time consultant specialising in advocacy evaluation and training with international NGOs.
