Thousands march on Nasserah (in Palestine 1948) in support of Raed Salah
by Adli Al-Baraqouni - humanitarian voice - 2011-07-10

Palestinian protesters denouncing Sheikh Raed Salah arrest

Thousands of Palestinians demonstrated in the streets of Al-Nasserah ( Nazareth) to the north of 1948 occupied Palestine to protest the arrest by the British government of Sheikh Raed Salah and to demand his immediate release.

The demonstration organized by the Islamic movement in 1948 under the slogan of “ All of us are Sheikh Raed Salah” to protest the continued detention of its leader in London, started after –noon ,after prayer at Assalam mosque in Al-Nasserah ,and was ended by a festival of supporting speeches.

Arab members of the Israeli Knesset, as well as the Higher Follow-up Committee, joined the Islamic movement to demonstrate against Britain’s continued detention of Sheikh Raed. They raised placards and banners which read, "we are all Raed Salah."

Jamal Zahalkha MK said the detention has been counter-productive as it has provided an opportunity for the British people and the world community to become more aware of the situation in Al-Quds(Jerusalem), the threats to Al Aqsa mosque and condition of Palestinians in “ Israel”.

In his speech to the demonstrators, Sheikh Kamal Khateeb, deputy head of the Islamic movement said he had no doubt that the detention order was given in “Israel” and the place of its execution was Britain.

He paid tribute to Sheikh Raed Salah for his steadfast struggle and promised that ultimately, he would return to Palestine triumphant and honoured among his people.

A British court turned down an application for bail on Friday to release Sheikh Salah, as his lawyers appealed to the supreme court for a reversal of his deportation order, which is to be decided on within a week.

British democracy :

It is worth mentioning to say that during the same week of arresting Sheikh Salah in London , an Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharonoth said former Israeli security minister Amir Peretz was able to escape from England from an arrest warrant over accusations of committing war crimes during Israel’s 2006 war on Lebanon.

Peretz was in England to speak after being advised by the Israeli justice and foreign ministries not to go as activists in the UK would push for an arrest warrant to be issued against him.

The source said he was forced to cancel the lecture at London University after learning that a warrant had in fact been issued.

He was able to evade arrest and flee the country before British police got to him, according to the source.
