The Palestinian Ministry of Health, in the caretaker government of Gaza has issued a report documenting the quality of medical and health relief that were provided to Gaza hospitals by the aid convoy “Miles of Smiles 4” in early days of the current month of Ramadan.

Delivering medicines to Gaza Hospitals by the convoy of Miles of Smiles ( 4 )

Introduction :

Gaza Strip is witnessing an escalating crisis, due to the ongoing blockade, that led to the destruction of many basics of life’s essentials.

Gaza Strip is actually undergoing a virtual humanitarian catastrophe, due to the ongoing siege, and to continued assaults of occupation forces that made its citizens in dire need to those contributing in alleviating their suffering.

The deteriorating situation reached the extent of preventing the entry of medicine to Gaza Strip, which resulted in making medical institutions including hospitals and medical centers suffer from severe shortage in drugs and necessary medical supplies. World Health Organization (WHO) has reaffirmed the shortage of basic drugs that are needed in Gaza hospitals, and has stated in its memorandum that 38% of the basic drugs were lacking in Gaza in early 2011, noting that such shortage affects all the facilities of the health ministry , whereas such situation of drug’s shortage, has affected 40% of primary health care services, and 80% of health care that Gaza hospitals are providing.

The memorandum also explained the impact of drug shortage on the patients and the health system that are difficult to be measured due to the dealing tools, and it stated some examples, as at Al-Shifa Hospital, the biggest in Gaza, where 260 cancer patients undergo chemotherapy treatment , while the effectiveness of such treatment depends on using a group of various drugs, and 100 of those patients are not treated appropriately, are at risk, due to drug shortage.

Also, the physicians at the trauma section said that a big number of patients are not getting their normal treatment, son some of them may have died , while others have attempted to travel abroad to get suitable treatment.

Meanwhile, WHO said that “ Many of primary health care suffer from the depletion of antibiotics, which means that some essential diseases cannot be treated like Diarrhea, pneumonia, and skin infections, due to drug shortage”.

It added that, in general, waiting for such mentioned drugs threatens the existence of hospitals in the long range and causes slow recovery, that may affect the patients health.

These facts that were noted by the WHO, in addition to the successive appeals of Health Ministry threatens to collapse the health situation and to significant stoppage of health services, as result of the severe lack of drugs and medical supplies , and the depletion of some necessary drugs for treating serious diseases like cancer, epilepsy, and renal failure that puts the lives of those patients at risk.

Thus came your generous aid and compassionate hands, through the convoy of Miles of Smiles 4 to carry medical and humanitarian relief , and to contribute in drawing a smiles on patients faces, so please accept our thanks and appreciation.
